Club Speed (Downtown this year)

WHY: Youth Pridefest provides a fun, safe and accepting celebration for youth of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender experience and those questioning their sexual orientation (LGBTQ) in northern Manhattan. This year's celebration will include a mini ball with several categories and cash prizes. "Houses get ready!" All this fun while we encourage the youth to be responsible and make healthy decisions about their health. Over thirty gay youth friendly agencies and providers are available to help connect youth to their various services. HIV counseling and testing is offered to those interested. In the past youth have found out their HIV positive status and are in care as a result of the health care provider connection made at Pridefest. "This event offers a unique opportunity to bring together youth of diverse sexual and gender orientation in a festive, educational, and affirming celebration while challenging homophobia and promoting positive social change in their communities," said Junior Garcia, of Harlem United.
WHO: The event is endorsed by over two dozen social service and health care providers and provides a necessary forum for these and other service providers to outreach to LGBTSTQ youth. Project S.T.A.Y. of NY Presbyterian Medical Center and the Health and Education Alternatives for Teens program will be on hand to provide FREE adolescent-friendly HIV counseling and testing. "Pridefest hopes to empower and motivate all participants to celebrate their identity while making responsible health decisions," said Dawn Dickerson, AIP Coordinator.
